Key takeaways

What should you know about +91 numbers in 30 seconds?

  1. Pick the app first, then the country. On +91 the delivery rate runs from 4% to 91% depending on the app.
  2. Price says nothing about delivery. Across 30 measured apps the two are almost unrelated (ρ = -0.15).
  3. The working carrier is often the second one. For 16 apps the carrier with a measured rate costs about 9¢ more than the cheapest. VSIM opens it by default.
  4. WhatsApp on +91 is a premium buy. At $2.80 it is dearer than in 108 of 122 countries, with a measured rate of 8%.
  5. UPI, banks and Aadhaar are out. They need the SIM in your own phone or your registered number.

Where can an OTP to an Indian number get lost?

Follow one code the way you would follow a parcel. It passes four checkpoints, and each one can stop it. The delivery rate on this page is the combined result of all four.

  2. Dispatched by the app

The app decides whether to send at all

Apps keep lists of number ranges they treat as virtual or misused, and some refuse to send to them. Messaging apps are the strictest.

  3. India's SMS filter

    Carriers check the sender

Businesses that text Indian numbers must register their sender name and templates on the DLT system, and since December 2024 carriers must be able to trace each message chain. Messages that fail the check can be blocked. We think this explains part of the low rates for some foreign apps; we have not measured it on its own.

Which of these situations sounds like yours?

Four reasons people ask us for a +91 number, with the answer we would give today. The senders are examples; every figure is live.

From a reader

I live in Dubai and want to sell my old car in Pune on OLX. The app wants an Indian number.

VSIM replies

This is exactly what a +91 number is for. OLX on its best +91 carrier delivers 47% at $0.25. Leave the order on that carrier: the cheapest one delivers far less.

Where do the numbers on this page come from?

Prices and rates are read from VSIM's live price list on every visit. Nothing is typed by hand, and nothing is rounded up.

An honest gap. Indian numbers are a small route for VSIM, far behind US numbers. That is too few orders to publish our own India rate, so the rates on this page are the carriers' records of recent orders, refreshed every 15 minutes.

Questions about Indian virtual numbers

Published 12 October 2026. Reviewed 14 October 2026. Prices and rates are live.

What is an India virtual number?

An India virtual number is a +91 mobile number you use online without a SIM card. On VSIM you rent one for a single verification code: the number appears on your order page, the SMS arrives there within a 15 to 20 minute window, and the order then closes.

Is it a real Indian mobile number?

Yes. It is a working +91 number on an Indian carrier route, in the normal 10-digit format that starts with 6, 7, 8 or 9. The difference is that you read its SMS on the VSIM website instead of on a phone.

How much does an Indian virtual number cost?

It depends on the app. Today +91 numbers cost from $0.09 to $2.80, and half of the 146 apps cost $0.31 or less. You pay per number, and nothing if the code does not arrive.

Can I use an Indian virtual number for WhatsApp?

You can, but it is rarely the best buy. A +91 WhatsApp number costs $2.80, more than in 108 of 122 countries, and it has no measured delivery rate yet. The best measured WhatsApp route today is Colombia, at 33% for $0.64.

Which apps work best with Indian numbers?

Today the best measured +91 routes are Nike (91%), eBay (78%), Tinder (64%) and Microsoft (63%). The full list on this page is sorted by delivery rate and updates every 15 minutes.

Can I set up Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or a bank app with it?

No. UPI and banking apps link your account to the SIM in your own phone, usually by sending an SMS from that SIM. A number you read on a website cannot send that SMS, so the setup cannot finish.

Can it receive an Aadhaar OTP?

No. Aadhaar sends its OTP only to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar, and a rented +91 number is not that number.

Why do some Indian OTPs never arrive?

Three things can stop one: the app may refuse number ranges it treats as virtual, Indian carriers block business SMS whose sender is not registered on the DLT system, and each carrier route has its own record. The delivery rate on this page shows the combined result for each app.

Is a more expensive +91 number more likely to work?

No. Across the 30 apps with a measured rate, price and delivery are almost unrelated today (Spearman ρ = -0.15). Compare the rate, not the price.

How long can I keep an Indian number?

Long enough for one code: the order window is 15 to 20 minutes. VSIM does not sell Indian numbers you keep. Its permanent numbers are US numbers.

What happens if the code does not arrive?

When the window ends with no SMS, the order closes and the full price returns to your VSIM balance automatically. You can also cancel earlier yourself, as long as no SMS has arrived.

Do I need an Indian ID or address?

No. You need a VSIM account with enough balance for one number. The app you sign up for may have its own rules.
