What is SMS verification, and why does the code sometimes never arrive?

SMS verification is an app texting a one-time code to a phone number to prove you control it. The code hops from the app to an SMS provider, to a carrier, to the number. We have watched 13,062 of these hops on our own numbers: 27% ended with a code, and the reasons the rest did not are on this page.

How does a verification code travel from the app to you?

Four hops, in this order. A code can stall at any of them, which is why the same app can work on one country's numbers and not another's.

  1. The app makes a code

It generates a one-time code, ties it to your sign-up and starts its own expiry clock.

  2. An SMS provider sends it

The app hands the text to a messaging provider, which picks a route to the number's country and carrier. Apps can refuse to send to numbers they distrust.

  3. The carrier delivers it

The mobile network passes the SMS to the number. Carriers can delay or filter messages from senders they do not recognise.

  4. You type it back

The code shows on the phone, or on your VSIM order page for a rented number. Type it before the app's clock runs out.

What happened to 13,062 real SMS verification orders?

Every one-code order on our previous site, 31 May 2024 to 11 October 2026, by 7,784 accounts. Each segment of the meter is one outcome.

68% were cancelled by the buyer before the timer ended, and only 5% ran out the clock. Most people do not wait the full timer; they cancel and try another number, which is often the right call on a route with low odds.

  • 8,904cancelled by the buyer68%
  • 695timer ran out5%

Cancelled and timed-out orders were refunded in full.

Which apps send verification codes most reliably?

Our busiest apps, tuned like stations on a radio dial. Each bar is the share of our own orders for that app that received a code; the label under it is how many orders that is based on.

The same app can swing from good to bad by country. Each app guide shows today's odds per country.

How long should you wait for an SMS code?

Most codes arrive within seconds or a few minutes. A VSIM number waits about 15 minutes in our tests and never more than 20; the shaded wedges are the two timers our orders ran on.

  • 30 min21 orders · 0%
  • 20 min10,791 orders · 83%
  • 15 min2,247 orders · 17%

If nothing arrives in the first few minutes on a low-odds route, cancelling and trying another country is usually faster than waiting. Cancelling before a code arrives is refunded.

Is SMS the safest way to get a verification code?

No. NIST, the US standards body, names the phone network as its one restricted authenticator: services may still use it, but must accept risks such as SIM changes and number porting. Climb the ladder once you are in.

The order of the upper rungs is our recommendation, not NIST's ranking.

  1. Passkey or security keyBound to your device; nothing to type or intercept.
  2. Authenticator appCodes made on your phone, no network needed.
  3. In-app promptA Yes or No on a phone you are already signed in on.
  4. Email codeAs safe as the inbox behind it.
  5. SMS or voice callRestricted by NIST. Fine for proving a number at sign-up; weakest for logins.

What do the verification terms mean?

  • OTP

    One-time password

A code that works once and expires quickly.

  • 2FA

    Two-factor authentication

A second check after your password, often an SMS code.

  • SC

    Short code

A 5 or 6-digit sender number apps text from.

  • ID

    Sender ID

The name shown as the sender, such as an app's brand.

  • PSTN

    Phone network

The public telephone network that carries SMS and calls.

  • %

    Delivery rate

Share of recent orders on a route that received a code.

What else do people ask about SMS verification?

What is SMS verification?

SMS verification is when an app proves you control a phone number by texting it a short one-time code, usually 4 to 8 digits, which you type back into the app. Apps use it at sign-up to tie an account to a number, and later to confirm logins.

What is an OTP code?

OTP means one-time password: a code that works once and usually expires within minutes. An SMS verification code is an OTP sent by text message; authenticator apps and email can deliver OTPs too.

Why is my SMS verification code not arriving?

The app may have refused the number, its SMS may be delayed or filtered by the carrier, or the number may have asked for too many codes. In our own records 27% of 13,062 one-code orders received a code; most of the rest were cancelled by the buyer before the timer ended. Choosing a country with high odds for your app matters most.

How long does an SMS verification code take?

Usually seconds to a few minutes. A VSIM number waits about 15 minutes in our tests and never more than 20; 10,791 of our past orders ran on a 20-minute timer. If no code arrives by then, the order closes and the price is refunded.

Can I receive SMS verification codes online without a phone?

Yes, with a virtual number: you rent a real mobile number online and the code shows up on a web page instead of a phone. Free public numbers exist too, but anyone can read their codes.

Is SMS verification secure?

It is the weakest common option. The US standards body NIST lists the phone network as its one restricted authenticator, because of risks like SIM swaps and number porting. Use an authenticator app or a passkey for logins where the app allows it.

Can I use the same number to verify twice?

Only while you still have the number. A one-code VSIM number is released when the order closes, so later codes sent to it cannot reach you; add an email or authenticator to the account as soon as you are in.
