What does an Australian mobile number look like?

At home it is ten digits: 0412 345 678. In an app it is +61 412 345 678: the 0 goes and +61 takes its place. Every Australian mobile starts with 4 after the country code. Numbers starting 2, 3, 7 and 8 are landlines, and 1300 and 1800 numbers are business lines. Numbers have moved freely between networks since 2001, so the digits no longer tell you the network.

Read in your browser; nothing is sent. Works with or without +61.

What can a rented Australian number not open?

A post office box only works if the key stays yours. A one-code number goes back to the pool after 20 minutes, so six things stay locked to it. Turn a key to read why.

What it does open: a sign-up you finish in one sitting, on an app that sends one SMS code. Need the same number later? See permanent numbers.

How do you get an Australian number and receive the code?

The Hills Hoist, the rotary clothesline in Australian backyards since 1945, turns one arm at a time. Four arms, four steps: about two minutes of pegging, then the wait for the SMS. Pick an arm.

Pick the app and Australia

0 of 6 checks. Tick what is true for your order.

  2. Keeping the 0 after +61

    +61 0412 345 678 is ten digits after the country code and fails. +61 412 345 678 is right.

  3. Buying +61 for an app that flies elsewhere
