How does PayPal send the verification code?

The ways PayPal sends and protects its codes, as its own help pages describe them. Knowing which stop you are at tells you whether to wait, resend or cancel.

  1. Text message

    Confirm your phone

When you add a number, PayPal texts a code that expires 15 minutes after it is issued. This is the step a VSIM number receives.

    Your VSIM number receives this
  2. Text message

    Identity checks by text

Some later texts ask you to reply 1 or 2, or carry a 6-digit code that lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. A released rented number cannot answer them.

  3. Alternative

    Try another way

If a code is missed, PayPal offers other ways to confirm it is you.

  4. Authenticator

    Authenticator app

2-step verification can run on an authenticator app, set up in a web browser. Do this before the rented number is gone.

What is a virtual number for PayPal?

A virtual number for PayPal is a real mobile number you rent online to receive one PayPal verification code by SMS, without a SIM card. On VSIM you choose the country, the number appears on your order page, the code shows up there, and the order closes. If no code arrives before the timer ends, the full price returns to your balance.

Which country is best for PayPal verification today?

USA has the best measured odds right now: 97% of recent orders got the code, for $1.12. In all, 27 countries have a measured PayPal rate, and 11 of them deliver 50% or more. Odds are refreshed every 15 minutes.

How much does a PayPal virtual number cost?

Today PayPal numbers cost from $0.10 to $10.56 across 132 countries, and half of them cost $0.52 or less. You pay only for the number that receives the code: every number that does not is refunded in full.

If failed numbers are refunded, what does a low rate cost me?

Time. Each number waits about 15 minutes for its code. A country that delivers 50% needs two tries on average; one that delivers 5% needs twenty, which can mean hours of waiting. That is why this page ranks countries by odds first and price second.

Can I remove the rented number from PayPal later?

Only if another number stays on the account: PayPal lets you remove a number when at least two are listed. Add a number you own first, then remove the rented one.

Is a rented number a good idea for a PayPal account?

For confirming a number once, it works. For anything that sends codes later, such as logins and identity checks, it does not, because the number is released after your order. Switch 2-step verification to an authenticator app and keep a number you own on the account.

How many tries does a PayPal code usually take?

In our own records, 19 buyers ordered PayPal numbers. 3 got a code on their first order, 3 on their second or third, 2 needed four or more, and 11 never got one. Choosing a country with high odds is the single biggest difference.

What happens if the PayPal code does not arrive?

The order closes when its timer ends, about 15 minutes in our tests and never more than 20, and the full price returns to your VSIM balance automatically. You can also cancel earlier yourself, as long as no SMS has arrived.

Can I keep the number for PayPal after the code?

No. A one-code number is released when the order closes, so a later PayPal code sent to it cannot reach you. If you need a number you keep, see VSIM permanent numbers, or add an email and a password to the account as soon as you are in.
