Truco is scored with beans or matches in bundles of five; here each match is two cents of that cost, Argentina against the cheapest other country. Argentina comes first in the world for 3 apps and in the top three for 8.

What does an Argentine mobile number look like?

Area code and number always add up to ten digits, but the same mobile is written three ways. At home: (11) 15 1234-5678, with a 15 before the number. From another city: a 0 in front of the area code too. From abroad: drop the 0 and the 15 and put a 9 after +54, +54 9 11 1234 5678. Write a number on the napkin and it is rewritten for an app.

  • 0Trunk prefix, dialled between cities. Drop it after +54.
  • 15Marks a mobile at home. Drop it after +54.
  • 9Marks a mobile from abroad. Many app forms want it; SMS routing often leaves it out, so if a form rejects +54 9, try +54 alone.

Argentina has three mobile networks, Personal, Claro and Movistar; numbers keep their area code when they change network.

What can a rented Argentine number not open?

After hours, Buenos Aires shops roll down painted metal shutters. Six shutters here, six things a one-code number cannot open, because it goes back to the pool after 20 minutes. Lift one to read why.

Mercado Pago and wallets

Wallets send a code to the number on your account each time you log in, pay or change phones. A rented number is gone after one code.

A line in your name

Argentine lines must be registered to a holder with DNI details, and unregistered lines cannot call, text or use data. A virtual number is not a chip and does not replace one.

Bank codes

Banks send a code to the number on your account each time you log in or transfer. The second code would go to a stranger.

Deliveries and couriers

A courier calls or texts the number on the order, often days later. It must still be yours.

Accounts you log back into

Any app that will ask for a code again next month needs the same number next month.
